ANC's Khusela Diko Under Fire for Seeking Lighter Treatment for Julius Mkhwanazi in Parliament Probe
The African National Congress (ANC) has faced criticism for allegedly attempting to shield Lieutenant General Julius Mkhwanazi, a senior police official embroiled in corruption allegations linked to Cat Matlala, from physically appearing before an Ad Hoc Committee in Parliament. ANC MP Khusela Diko, a member of the committee, has reportedly pushed for Mkhwanazi to submit a written statement instead of testifying in person.
The move has raised eyebrows, given Mkhwanazi’s central role in allegations of police corruption and interference, including claims of unlawful activities involving Crime Intelligence and the leaking of classified information. Critics, including opposition parties, question why the ANC is advocating for leniency toward Mkhwanazi, who is also an ANC member.
Diko has denied any bias, stating the ANC supports a fair and transparent process. However, the controversy highlights tensions within the committee, with some MPs arguing that Mkhwanazi’s testimony is critical to the investigation. The committee is probing allegations made by Mkhwanazi himself, including claims of a R600,000 unauthorized wall built at former Minister Nathi Mthethwa’s home.
The debate underscores broader concerns about accountability and the ANC’s influence in South Africa’s governance. Mkhwanazi has made explosive allegations, implicating figures like former IPID head Robert McBride and journalist Abram Mashego, further complicating the political landscape. The committee will decide whether Mkhwanazi must appear in person or submit a written statement. The outcome could impact public trust in parliamentary oversight.
