The National Working Committee (NWC) of the African National Congress (ANC) has approved a request for special leave submitted by Comrade Senzo Mchunu, allowing him to step back from his duties with the National Executive Committee (NEC) and the NWC. The decision follows a review of the party’s guidelines on credibility, integrity and the handling of corruption allegations.
According to the ANC’s “Guidelines and Procedures: Implementation of National Conference Resolutions on ANC Credibility and Integrity: Dealing with Corruption and on Fighting Crime and Corruption,” which were adopted by the NEC on 13‑14 February 2021 and amended at a Special NEC meeting on 24‑25 April 2022, paragraph 3.1.1 states that any member, office‑bearer or public representative who has been indicted to appear in a court of law on a charge of corruption or another serious crime must immediately step aside pending the finalisation of the case. The NWC noted that Comrade Mchunu has not been indicted on any such charge, and therefore the mandatory step‑aside provision does not apply to him.
The committee emphasized, however, that the absence of an indictment does not preclude a member from voluntarily stepping aside or taking special leave if they deem it appropriate. In his request, Comrade Mchunu expressed understanding of the public’s frustration over crime and corruption, stating that “people are feeling the trauma of crime and corruption in the country.” The NWC welcomed his acknowledgement and said his decision to seek special leave reflects a responsible approach to the party’s broader anti‑corruption agenda.
The special leave will remain in effect until further notice, and the NWC said it would continue to monitor the situation in line with the party’s commitment to uphold integrity and accountability. No further comment was provided on whether additional measures might be taken pending any future developments.
