Ekurhuleni Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza has ordered a review of all promotions made by suspended Deputy Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Chief Julius Mkhwanazi. Mkhwanazi was suspended following allegations of misconduct, including links to criminal activities, which have cast a shadow over the city's safety initiatives.
The move comes after Mkhwanazi's suspension was upheld, and the City of Ekurhuleni launched an investigation into the allegations. The review aims to ensure that all promotions were made fairly and without prejudice.
Mayor Xhakaza has emphasized the city's commitment to transparency and accountability, particularly in the wake of Mkhwanazi's suspension. The EMPD Festive Season Campaign, launched recently, will proceed as planned, with a focus on strengthening community safety operations.
This development follows Mayor Xhakaza's recent decision to suspend a controversial electricity surcharge, which had sparked violent protests in Thembisa. The mayor has urged residents to remain calm and participate in forthcoming consultative processes.
