Pretoria: – In a late‑night raid that’s sending shockwaves through the capital, police have detained four Chinese nationals suspected of running a brothel out of a residential building in the city’s central district.
Officers from the Tshwane Metropolitan Police swooped on the premises after receiving a tip‑off about illegal activity. Inside, they uncovered a fully‑fitted “entertainment” space complete with private rooms, a bar stocked with a range of local and imported alcohol brands, and evidence of prostitution. The suspects – two men and two women, all in their late 20s to early 40s – were taken into custody without incident.
Tshwane Executive Mayor Dr Nasiphi Moya led a late‑night by‑law enforcement operation in Pretoria’s central business district on 11 November 2025. The raid, focused on a sports bar at the corner of Brown and Bloed Streets, uncovered a prostitution ring, counterfeit alcohol sales and illegal employment.
Police detained four Chinese nationals, believed to be the main operators, along with about 30 undocumented workers. Among those arrested were 15 women forced into sex work and 15 men lacking valid work permits. The venue contained several rooms clearly set up for prostitution, and authorities also seized counterfeit alcohol that posed health and tax risks.
Investigators revealed that the Chinese operators had allegedly paid Tshwane officials R5 000 each month for illegal electricity connections, exposing municipal corruption. Mayor Moya publicly condemned the officials, calling their conduct “disloyal,” and pledged to intensify clean‑up efforts in the Pretoria CBD. Speaking to residents Moya said“We will be camping on this side of the city, it’s very dirty, and it’s going to look different in the next few weeks.” Further raids are expected to occur around the city.
Neighbouring residents described the building as a quiet residential block that had recently become a hub of unusual traffic, especially after dark. “We heard strange noises and saw a lot of cars coming and going at odd hours,” one neighbour told us. “It’s a relief that the police finally acted.”
The four suspects are expected to appear before the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court later this week, where they will face charges of running a brothel, possession of illegal liquor and possible human‑trafficking offences. Authorities have launched a broader investigation to determine whether the operation extended beyond Pretoria’s borders.
