BREAKING NEWS: Fourth Suspect Appears in Court for Insurance-Related Murders

A 53-year-old man, Leshweng Johannes Shokane, appeared in the Polokwane Magistrates' Court on November 5, 2025, in connection with a series of insurance-related murders. Shokane is the brother of former police officer Rachel Raesetsa Shokane Kutumela and Annah Shokane, as well as the uncle of Madjadji Flora Shokane. He faces multiple charges, including nine counts of murder, money laundering, and defeating the ends of justice. Allegations and Charges According to the allegations, between 2013 and 2022, Rachel and Annah allegedly took out life and funeral insurance policies for several victims, later claiming payouts totaling approximately R10 million as beneficiaries. The payouts were made by several service providers, including major banks and insurance companies. Shokane and Madjadji allegedly shared the unlawful proceeds with the other accused. Bail Hearing and Trial Shokane was arrested on November 4, 2025, and will remain in custody until his bail hearing on November 18, 2025. The trial of Rachel, Annah, and Madjadji has been transferred to the Polokwane High Court, where it is set to commence from October 5 to 30, 2026. The State has brought an application to join Shokane to the main case involving the other three accused.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson, Mashudu Malabi, confirmed that the accused will remain in custody until the trial.
