South Africa's G20 presidency has achieved a significant milestone, with the adoption of a leaders' declaration addressing global challenges like climate change, despite the United States' absence. The declaration, drafted without US input, reflects the priorities of the Global South and was approved by the G20 members meeting in Johannesburg. "The president will not hand over to a junior embassy official the presidency of the G20. It's a breach of protocol that is not going to be accommodated," said Vincent Magwenya, spokesperson for President Cyril Ramaphosa.
The move highlights strained relations between Pretoria and the Trump administration, which boycotted the summit, citing disagreements over the agenda. The declaration includes language on climate action and sustainable development, areas where the US has previously expressed opposition.
This diplomatic win underscores South Africa's commitment to multilateralism and its role as a leader in the Global South. The G20 summit will now shift focus to implementation and future cooperation.
