Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has narrowly escaped a motion of no confidence sponsored by the Democratic Alliance (DA). The motion, which was rejected by a majority of political parties in the Gauteng Legislature, was brought forward due to Lesufi's handling of the controversial Amapanyaza programme, a crime prevention initiative deemed unlawful by the Public Protector.
The DA had argued that Lesufi's leadership was untenable due to "maladministration, poor leadership, and failures of governance". However, the motion failed to gain sufficient support, with most parties rejecting it. The DA had cited Lesufi's "reckless and irresponsible implementation" of Amapanyaza as a key reason for the motion, but ultimately, it wasn't enough to remove him from office.
