BREAKING NEWS: Gauteng Provincial Government Condemns Vandalism of G20 Signage and City Infrastructure
Johannesburg – The Gauteng Provincial Government has issued a strong condemnation after several incidents of vandalism targeted G20 summit signage and recently upgraded infrastructure across Johannesburg. In a statement released on Tuesday, provincial officials said the acts, which include the destruction of streetlights, signage and other essential facilities, are “unacceptable attacks on the city’s progress and the safety of its residents.”
The vandalism was first reported in the days leading up to the G20 summit, a high‑profile event that has prompted a series of civic upgrades intended to showcase Johannesburg’s modernisation. Authorities allege that organised groups have been deliberately targeting streetlights, traffic signals and public art installations, causing disruptions to traffic and posing safety risks to pedestrians.
Gauteng Premier Panyaza Sisulu called the actions “a blatant disregard for the rule of law and the collective effort to make our city a beacon of development.” He added that the provincial government, together with the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department, has launched an investigation to identify those responsible and to restore the damaged infrastructure as quickly as possible.
The public has been urged to report any suspicious activity to the provincial hotline, and community leaders have been asked to assist in safeguarding the city’s assets during the summit period. The Gauteng Provincial Government said it will provide updates on the progress of repairs and on any arrests made in connection with the vandalism.
