BREAKING NEWS: Malusi Gigaba Faces Corruption Charges in Transnet Scandal

Former Minister of Public Enterprises, Malusi Gigaba, has appeared in court on corruption charges linked to a massive Transnet deal worth billions of rands. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) formally charged Gigaba in connection with alleged irregularities in procurement activities at Transnet, South Africa's largest logistics state-owned enterprise.

Gigaba, a prominent member of the African National Congress (ANC) National Executive Committee, is accused of receiving undue financial benefits during his tenure as Minister of Public Enterprises. The allegations include facilitating corrupt procurement contracts, bribery, and kickbacks on major deals, particularly in the locomotive procurement scandal, which involved inflated contracts worth R54 billion.

The charges against Gigaba are part of the ongoing efforts to address state capture and corruption in South Africa. The Zondo Commission previously implicated Gigaba in facilitating undue influence by the Gupta family, a wealthy business family accused of capturing state decision-making for private gain.

Gigaba has maintained his innocence and expressed commitment to cooperating with the legal process. His court case has been postponed to January 30, 2026, for disclosure of the docket and provision of an indictment.
