BREAKING NEWS: US Attempts to Block G20 Declaration Ahead of South Africa Summit

The United States has written to South Africa, warning against making a G20 declaration without its presence at the leaders' summit this weekend. This move is seen as a last-ditch attempt to undermine South Africa's G20 presidency.

The US has made it clear that it will oppose any outcome document framed as a consensus G20 position without US agreement. However, South Africa's G20 Sherpa, Ambassador Xolisa Mabhongo, has stated that the decision to adopt a declaration is not dependent on South Africa, but rather on all G20 members.

Despite the US absence, 42 countries have confirmed their participation in the G20 Summit in Johannesburg, including 20 member states, 16 guest countries, and six countries representing regional economic communities. The summit will focus on themes such as inclusive and sustainable economic growth, building global resilience, and shaping a fair and just future.

Several nations, including Germany, the UK, and France, support South Africa's efforts to obtain a joint statement. The outcome of the summit remains uncertain, with the US pushing for a non-binding Chair's Statement instead of a comprehensive Leaders' Declaration.
