SABC presidential correspondent Tshepo Ikaneng has blown the whistle on alleged corruption and collusion within the state broadcaster, accusing senior Editor Deidre Uren and other editors of conspiring to undermine Black political parties in South Africa. Ikaneng claims the editors are working to unseat parties like the ANC, MKP, and EFF in the upcoming Local Government elections.
According to Ikaneng, he spoke out against the alleged collusion and was subsequently harassed and threatened. He has opened a case with the Hawks, stating, "I want the Hawks to investigate all these matters. This is treason - the SABC editors are working to destroy South Africa."
The SABC has responded by firing Ikaneng and serving him with court papers, demanding he retract the allegations, which they deem defamatory. The broadcaster has not addressed the substance of Ikaneng's claims.
Ikaneng's allegations have sparked concerns about media freedom and the integrity of the electoral process. The National Union of Journalists has called for an investigation into the matter, emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability within state media.
The controversy has also drawn reactions from politicians, with some calling for an urgent investigation into the allegations. The outcome of the case is being closely watched, with many awaiting the Hawks' response to Ikaneng's claims.
