Suspended Ekurhuleni Metro Police (EMPD) Deputy Chief Julius Mkhwanazi testified that he did not install blue lights in the vehicles of attempted murder accused, Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala. Mkhwanazi's testimony comes amidst allegations that Matlala's private vehicles were unlawfully fitted with blue lights and registered as municipal assets, a scheme allegedly facilitated by senior law enforcement officials.
The controversy surrounds Matlala, who faces charges including attempted murder, money laundering, and possession of a fraudulent Eswatini identity document. The KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, previously testified that Matlala's vehicles were fraudulently registered under the Ekurhuleni municipality, with blue lights intended solely for law enforcement use.
Julius Mkhwanazi's suspension followed damning revelations at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry into police corruption. The commission is investigating allegations of corruption, political interference, and shielding of criminal networks within the South African Police Service (SAPS) and EMPD.
