Police in Delmas, Mpumalanga, have arrested a 43-year-old man from the Kingdom of Eswatini for possession of illicit cigarettes. The arrest was made on December 5, 2025, at around 22:00 in Sundra, after police received a tip-off about the transportation of contraband cigarettes in water tanks.
Acting on the information, police stopped a truck with two trailers in Sundra and discovered twelve 5,000-liter water tanks filled with cartons of illicit cigarettes. The haul consisted of 25 pallets of cigarettes, with an estimated street value of R17.4 million.
The suspect is expected to appear before the Delmas District Court on Monday, December 8, 2025, facing charges of possession of illicit goods. This bust highlights the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat the illicit cigarette trade in South Africa.
