National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP) Advocate Shamila Batohi has been rebuked by Justice Bess Nkabinde, chairperson of the Nkabinde Enquiry, for her disrespectful conduct during proceedings. The inquiry is investigating the fitness of suspended South Gauteng Director of Public Prosecutions, Advocate Andrew Chauke, to hold office.
Batohi walked out of the inquiry after a lunch break, citing the need for legal counsel, despite being in the middle of cross-examination. Justice Nkabinde described her actions as "totally disrespectful to everybody" and warned that simply walking out could be seen as disrespectful to Parliament.
"I apologise, that was not my intention," Batohi said, adding that she wasn't withdrawing from the inquiry but needed time to consult with her legal team. The inquiry has been adjourned for the year, with Batohi expected to return next year to continue her testimony.
