The remains of Ekurhuleni's Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Roads and Transport, Andile Mngwevu, have been found in Mozambique, following a devastating flood that swept his vehicle away on January 17, 2026. Mngwevu was part of an official delegation visiting Chokwé, Mozambique, when the incident occurred.
The City of Ekurhuleni confirmed Mngwevu's disappearance on January 18, and a joint search operation involving South African and Mozambican authorities was launched. The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) also deployed rescue teams, including an Oryx helicopter, to assist in the search efforts.
The flooding in Mozambique has caused widespread damage, with over 5,000 km of roads affected and more than 100 people reported dead. The City of Ekurhuleni has expressed its condolences to Mngwevu's family and is working closely with authorities to ensure a thorough investigation.
