Sibongile Mani, a former Walter Sisulu University student, has graduated with honours despite being convicted of stealing R14 million from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS). Mani was initially sentenced to five years in prison for spending over R800,000 of the erroneously deposited funds, but her sentence was later overturned and replaced with a suspended sentence and community service.
Mani's case sparked controversy, with some arguing she was unfairly targeted while others involved in corruption scandals went unpunished. The incident highlighted concerns about financial management and accountability in South Africa's education system.
