Patrice Motsepe, the billionaire businessman and president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), is reportedly throwing his hat into the ring for the presidency of the African National Congress (ANC). Despite his public declarations of disinterest, a campaign under the moniker 'PM27 Savumelana' has visibly launched, with T-shirts already being printed in Gauteng.
The campaign, which references Motsepe's initials and intended leadership at the 2027 elective conference, has sparked intense debate within the party. Some view Motsepe as a fresh face with the potential to unite the party and restore voter trust, while others question his lack of grassroots political experience and deep ties to the business elite.
ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula has vowed to "clamp down" on party members promoting Motsepe's candidacy, describing the campaign as "mischievous" and premature. Mbalula emphasized that the party's focus should be on the upcoming local government elections.
Motsepe's potential candidacy has also raised questions about the party's direction and values. Some see him as a symbol of economic success, while others worry about the influence of wealth in politics.
