US President Donald Trump has warned Canada that if it concludes a trade deal with China, he will impose a 100% tariff on all goods coming over the border. Trump stated that "China will eat Canada alive, completely devour it, including the destruction of their businesses, social fabric, and general way of life" if Canada proceeds with the deal.
The threat comes after Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney secured a "preliminary but landmark trade agreement" with China to reduce tariffs during a visit to Beijing. Trump accused Carney of trying to make Canada a "Drop Off Port" for Chinese goods entering the US and warned of "serious consequences" if the deal is realized.
Canada's minister responsible for trade with the US, Dominic LeBlanc, pushed back against Trump's threat, stating that there is no pursuit of a free trade deal with China, but rather a resolution on several important tariff issues.
