BREAKING NEWS : Chery Tiggo 7 Pro scores low two‑star safety rating in Global NCAP crash test

The popular Chery Tiggo 7 Pro earned just a two‑star adult‑occupant safety rating in Global NCAP’s #SaferCarsForAfrica crash test released on 18 February 2026. Engineers found the footwell and bodyshell unstable, and because the car lacks standard side‑head airbags, a side‑pole impact test could not be completed, leaving occupants vulnerable to head injuries in side collisions. Electronic Stability Control and seat‑belt reminders are fitted but didn’t meet NCAP’s effectiveness thresholds. Child‑occupant safety received three stars, yet the child‑restraint system failed installation tests and the vehicle can’t deactivate the front passenger airbag for rear‑facing seats, raising additional risk for young passengers.

Global NCAP’s chief executive, Richard Woods, called the result “very disappointing” and criticised Chery for touting a separate five‑star Euro NCAP rating that applies to a higher‑spec version, saying such marketing can mislead South African buyers. The Automobile Association of South Africa echoed the concern, urging consumers to rely on market‑specific NCAP results and warning that without side‑head protection, no vehicle should be sold in the region.
