Deputy Defence Minister Bantu Holomisa announced that the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) is on standby for a ground deployment to protect citizens, and he delivered a blunt message to criminals: “We won’t play — never point a firearm at soldiers. We are not the police.”
He said the department is awaiting final parliamentary authorisation, after which troops will move into gang‑ravaged areas within two weeks, working alongside SAPS to restore law and order. Holomisa stressed that soldiers will be carrying out a lawful mandate, and anyone who targets them will face serious consequences, urging the public to cooperate and refrain from hostility .
