M23 rebels' spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Willy Ngoma, has been killed in a drone strike by the Congolese army in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The strike occurred in Rubaya, North Kivu, a key coltan-mining area controlled by the M23 rebels. Ngoma was a prominent figure, responsible for planning and overseeing M23 operations, and had recently gained attention for expelling Romanian mercenaries from the DRC.
The M23 group has been in conflict with the government for over a decade, citing the need to protect the rights of the minority Tutsi group. Ngoma had been sanctioned by the UN in December 2023 for human rights abuses, including killings, attacks, and sexual violence against civilians.
The killing of Ngoma comes amid ongoing ceasefire talks between the Congolese government and M23, mediated by Qatar. The incident is likely to escalate tensions in the region.
