The Polokwane Magistrate’s Court this morning adjourned the case of Lekompo artist Lehlogonolo “Shebeshxt” Chauke, moving the next hearing to 27 March 2026. Magistrate Godfrey Netshiozwi said the delay will allow the defence to finalise arguments on the newly added charges and to address fresh evidence presented by the state [1][3]. Shebeshxt, who faces nine counts including attempted murder, assault, robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm, remains in custody while the court prepares for the next session.
During today’s brief appearance, prosecutors outlined additional allegations linked to a violent altercation in Lebowakgomo earlier this year, claiming that Shebeshxt and an associate fired shots at a rival group, injuring two people and stealing a vehicle. The defence team, led by advocate Thabo Mokoena, requested more time to review surveillance footage and witness statements that were only disclosed last week, prompting the magistrate to grant the postponement.
The case has drawn significant public attention, with supporters of the artist gathering outside the courthouse, chanting slogans and calling for his release on bail. Meanwhile, community leaders have urged calm, emphasising the need for the justice system to run its course without interference.
Legal analysts say the extended timeline could impact Shebeshxt’s career, as he remains barred from performing and recording while awaiting trial. The court has scheduled a pre‑trial conference for early February 2026 to address procedural matters and set dates for evidentiary hearings.
