Mugabe’s Son Faces New “Defeating Justice” Charge as Court Appearance Looms

Bellarmine “Chatunga” Mugabe, son of former Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe, appeared in the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court today, where police confirmed he now faces an additional charge of defeating the ends of justice alongside attempted murder after a 23‑year‑old gardener was shot at his Hyde Park residence on 19 February 2026.

Authorities say the firearm used in the shooting has not been recovered, and a police dog unit continues to search the property for the weapon. Chatunga, 28, and a 33‑year‑old co‑accused were taken into custody and are expected to be formally charged within 48 hours.

Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe, the 28‑year‑old son of Zimbabwe’s former President Robert Mugabe, was taken into custody on Tuesday after a gardener at his Sandton home was shot and critically injured. Police say officers responded to reports of gunfire at the property, finding guard Elvis Bvumbwe with multiple fractures and severe trauma. Witnesses described a heated altercation before a single round was fired, leaving Bvumbwe fighting for his life in a nearby hospital.

According to investigators, Chatunga allegedly brandished a firearm during the dispute and fired at the gardener, who was attempting to intervene in a confrontation between the young Mugabe and several visitors. The exact motive remains unclear, but sources close to the scene say tensions escalated over a disagreement about access to the residence. Police have not yet released a formal statement, but they confirmed that Chatunga faces charges of attempted murder and unlawful possession of a firearm.
