Thabo Bester, the convicted murderer and rapist, is set to challenge his transfer from Kgosi Mampuru Prison in Pretoria to eBongweni Super Maximum Prison in KwaZulu-Natal. Bester's legal team argues that the transfer, which took place without prior notice, will hinder their ability to prepare for his upcoming trial in July 2026.
The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) maintains that the transfer is a routine procedure, guided by security risk assessments aimed at ensuring the safety and stability of correctional facilities. DCS spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo stated that Bester will continue to receive appropriate care and retain full access to legal representation, family communication, and court processes.
Bester, dubbed the "Facebook Rapist," was serving a life sentence for murder and rape before his dramatic escape from Mangaung Correctional Centre in 2022. He was recaptured in Tanzania in 2023 and is facing additional charges related to his escape.
