The ANC in Johannesburg has decided to recall Dada Morero as the mayor of the City of Johannesburg, marking a significant political shift after nearly four years of Morero navigating coalition challenges and service delivery crises. This decision follows relentless pressure from opposition parties, including the DA, ActionSA, UDM, Al Jama-ah, and others, who accused him of governance failures, such as unstable electricity, water shortages, decaying infrastructure, and administrative interference.
Morero, who assumed the mayoral role in August 2024, had survived several no-confidence motions with the help of ANC coalition partners. However, internal factional battles within the ANC and calls for stability ahead of local government elections likely contributed to the decision to recall him.
The minority governing parties had requested Morero's resignation, citing "leadership paralysis" and governance concerns. The ANC's regional leadership has reportedly tabled a request to recall Morero, but the party is still consulting with provincial and national leadership.
