BREAKING NEWS: Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola Summoned to Court Over R360m Cat Matlala Tender Scandal

Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola has been summoned to court on April 21, 2026, facing charges related to the irregular awarding of a R360 million health services tender to Medicare24 Tshwane District, a company linked to Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) confirmed Masemola's summons, citing contravention of the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA).

The tender, awarded in June 2024, was cancelled in May 2025 due to irregularities. Investigations revealed alleged collusion between SAPS officials and Medicare24, favouring the company despite not meeting tender requirements. Masemola is the third National Commissioner to face charges while in office, following Jackie Selebi and Khomotso Phahlane.

Twelve senior police officers, including Brigadier Petunia Lenono and Major-General Busisiwe Temba, were previously arrested and charged with fraud, corruption, and contravention of the PFMA.
