Former Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena is receiving consular assistance from South Africa's diplomatic mission in Algeria after being arrested for allegedly violating the country's foreign currency regulations. The 39-year-old was stopped by customs officials at Houari Boumediene Airport in Algiers while attempting to leave the country with undeclared foreign currency, an act prohibited under Algerian law.
The incident occurred shortly after Mokwena and MC Alger mutually agreed to part ways, ending his eight-month tenure with the team. Mokwena had guided MC Alger to the top of the Algerian league table before his sudden departure from the club.
The South African embassy in Algiers confirmed it had been notified of Mokwena's arrest and is providing him with consular support. Officials said the mission is in contact with the coach as the matter proceeds through Algeria's legal processes.
Reports indicate the case may be heard in a court in Dar El Beida, which has jurisdiction over matters related to the airport. Mokwena is expected to join Libyan giants Al-Ittihad SC, where he'll reunite with former player Thembinkosi Lorch.
The situation comes as a shock to football fans, given Mokwena's successful tenure at MC Alger, which included winning the Algeria Super Cup. The circumstances surrounding his arrest have raised eyebrows, with speculation about the coach's future hanging in the balance.
Mokwena's arrest highlights the strict laws surrounding foreign currency in Algeria, with severe penalties for those found guilty of violating regulations. The South African embassy is urging anyone with concerns about Mokwena's situation to contact them for assistance.
