South African football coach Rulani Mokwena has been arrested at Houari Boumediene Airport in Algiers, Algeria, for allegedly violating the country's currency regulations. The 39-year-old was stopped by customs officials while attempting to leave the country with undeclared foreign currency, reportedly around €16,000 ($17,000 USD) hidden in unusual places, including a shoe and a book.
Mokwena, who recently parted ways with Algerian champions MC Alger, was set to join Libyan giants Al-Ittihad SC, where he would reunite with his former player Thembinkosi Lorch. The South African embassy in Algeria has confirmed it's providing consular assistance to Mokwena.
Mokwena's tenure at MC Alger was marked by both success and controversy, leading the team to the Algerian Super Cup title but also facing criticism for their exit from the Algerian Cup and CAF Champions League.
