BREAKING NEWS: Julius Mkhwanazi and Co-Accused Kagiso Lerutla Case Transferred To Boksburg Regional Court
Boksburg – Suspended Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department Deputy Chief Julius Mkhwanazi and Ekurhuleni City Manager Kagiso Lerutla have appeared in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court this morning. Their matter has been postponed and transferred to the Boksburg Regional Court on the 9th of June 2026.
The pair face charges of corruption, fraud, and defeating the ends of justice linked to a 2019 incident in which they allegedly arranged for a third party to impersonate Lerutla in court over a speeding case.
According to the State, Lerutla was arrested for speeding in March 2019 and released on R1,000 bail. On the date he was due in court, he allegedly recruited Mkhwanazi to find an impersonator to appear in his place while he attended a job interview. The State alleges the accused shared gratification of about R400,000 for the scheme.
Mkhwanazi and Lerutla were arrested in April 2026 and granted R30,000 bail each on 28 April 2026. As part of their bail conditions, they surrendered their passports and were warned not to contact witnesses directly or indirectly.
The case was postponed to 13 May 2026 for a regional court date. The National Prosecuting Authority has said it will continue to prosecute the matter diligently.
