BREAKING NEWS: uMkhonto weSizwe Party Chief Whip Mmabatho Mokoena-Zondi arrested on fraud charges

Cape Town – uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party Chief Whip in the National Assembly, Mmabatho Mokoena-Zondi, has been arrested on charges of fraud. The 46-year-old MP was taken into custody and is expected to make her first appearance in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

According to allegations, between August and December 2024 Mokoena-Zondi defrauded four MK Party employees of more than R233,000. She is accused of forcing the staff members to pay between 50% and 60% of their salaries under the pretext that the money was for legal costs related to party leader Jacob Zuma’s ongoing legal battles.

Mokoena-Zondi was appointed MK Party Chief Whip in the National Assembly earlier this year, replacing Colleen Makhubele. She previously served as Chief Whip in the National Council of Provinces and was reinstated to the role by Zuma after an internal disciplinary process that had recommended her expulsion. The MK Party has not yet commented on the arrest.
