Pretoria – The Nigerian government has announced plans to repatriate its citizens from South Africa following heightened tensions over illegal immigration.
Officials said the decision aims to ensure the safety of Nigerians residing in the country during a period of increased public concern and sporadic incidents linked to undocumented foreign nationals. No timeline for the repatriation process has been confirmed.
The South African Department of Home Affairs has in recent months intensified operations targeting illegal immigration and unregistered businesses. The campaign has drawn mixed reactions, with community groups raising concerns about xenophobia and the impact on foreign nationals living in the country legally.
Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it is engaging with South African authorities to coordinate the safe return of its citizens and to address reports of harassment. The ministry urged Nigerians in South Africa to register with the Nigerian High Commission for assistance.
South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation said it is committed to maintaining diplomatic relations and upholding the rule of law while addressing immigration violations. Both governments said they are working to prevent further escalation. The situation remains under monitoring as discussions between the two countries continue.
