BREAKING NEWS: Disgraced Magistrate Who Struck Joe Ferrari Case Off Roll Has Retired

Disgraced Chief Magistrate Tuletu Tonjeni has reportedly retired from the bench, weeks after presiding over the high-profile case involving taxi boss Joe Ferrari Sibanyoni and co-accused at the Kwaggafontein Mkobola Magistrate’s Court. The retirement, said to have taken effect on Friday 29 May 2026, comes after Tonjeni struck the matter off the roll on 15 and 18 May 2026 due to the non-appearance of prosecutor Mkhuseli Ntaba.

The case involved charges of extortion and money laundering against Sibanyoni and his co-accused, and had drawn significant public attention. Tonjeni’s decision to remove the matter from the court roll without a prosecutor present sparked criticism and raised questions about case management in the district court.

Following the incident, Tonjeni was reportedly reported to the Magistrates’ Commission for her conduct in handling the Joe Ferrari matter. The complaint centered on how the case was struck off the roll and the implications for prosecution of the extortion and money laundering charges. With her retirement now reported, questions have emerged about whether disciplinary proceedings will continue.

It’s further reported that Tonjeni marked her departure with a farewell function on Friday at the Three Star Wildlife Events and Family Resort, located between Mbombela and White River. The event was attended by colleagues, family, and friends as she concluded her career in the magistracy.

Legal observers note that retirement typically ends a magistrate’s liability to be called to account before the Magistrates’ Commission, meaning Tonjeni may no longer be required to answer for her actions in the Sibanyoni case. The development leaves the status of the charges against Joe Ferrari Sibanyoni and his co-accused uncertain, with the NPA expected to decide on next steps for re-enrollment of the matter.
