BREAKING NEWS: Petrol prices up, diesel drops: 93 and 95 petrol to rise R1.43/l, diesel down up to R3.25/l
South African motorists are facing mixed news at the pumps as the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources adjusts fuel prices. Petrol prices will increase by R1.43 per litre for both 93 and 95 octane grades, while diesel prices will drop significantly, by between R2.62 and R3.25 per litre depending on sulphur content.
The petrol increase reverses recent relief for drivers, with both ULP and LRP grades of 93 and 95 octane set to cost R1.43 more per litre. The adjustment adds immediate pressure to household budgets, coming after months of volatility driven by international crude oil prices and rand-dollar exchange rate swings.
In contrast, diesel users will get substantial relief. The wholesale price for diesel is set to decrease by between R2.62 and R3.25 per litre. Unlike petrol, diesel retail prices are not regulated, so final pump prices may vary between stations, but the wholesale cut is expected to filter through to transport, logistics, and farming costs.
Fuel price changes in South Africa are calculated monthly based on two main factors: the average Brent crude oil price and the rand exchange rate against the US dollar during the review period. When the rand strengthens it buffers oil shocks, while a weaker rand amplifies international price increases.
The new prices take effect at midnight and will impact everything from daily commuting to goods transportation. Analysts note that diesel underpins agriculture, freight, mining and manufacturing, so the decrease could help ease cost pressure across supply chains. Motorists are advised to check the exact date of implementation with the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources for official rates in their area.
