BREAKING NEWS: Vioolsdrift Bible Study Teacher Sentenced to 75 Years for Sexual Offences Against Children aged 7 to 12.

Springbok – A 45-year-old Bible study teacher from Vioolsdrift, Northern Cape, was sentenced in the Springbok Regional Court after being convicted on 33 charges of sexual offences involving children.

Jo-Ann Klaase, originally from Okiep, received a total sentence of 75 years, which the court ordered to run concurrently in terms of Section 280 of the Criminal Procedure Act. She will effectively serve 20 years in prison.

The court found Klaase guilty of offences committed between January 2022 and November 2023 against children aged 7 to 12 in Vioolsdrift. The charges included rape, attempted rape, sexual exploitation, sexual grooming, and exposing children to sexual material and conduct.

The State said Klaase invited children to her home for Bible lessons and spiritual guidance. The offences took place in an outbuilding at the property. The court heard that she lured children with money, sweets, and outings.

The matter came to light after some of the children reported what happened to their school principal, Theo Alister. The principal then involved a social worker and police.

Klaase initially faced 18 charges. State prosecutor Basil Kock told the court after sentencing that the charges were increased to 33 during the trial. Klaase pleaded guilty and admitted her conduct was illegal.

In addition to the prison sentence, the court ordered that Klaase’s name be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders. Protection orders were also issued. Principal Theo Alister welcomed the sentence and urged communities and educators to create safe spaces for children to report abuse.

“This sentence shows that these crimes carry serious consequences,” Alister said. “I hope it encourages children and communities to come forward, and I urge educators to earn the trust of learners so they have someone safe to talk to.” The National Prosecuting Authority said the case was prioritised due to the number of young victims involved.
