JOHANNESBURG – Johannesburg Director of Public Prosecutions, Andrew Chauke, has been cleared and found fit to remain in office.
The finding follows allegations made by former National Prosecuting Authority head Advocate Shamila Batohi that Chauke had wrongly charged former KwaZulu-Natal Hawks head Johan Booysen and members of the Cato Manor Organised Crime Unit with racketeering.
Batohi raised the concerns during her tenure at the NPA, questioning Chauke’s decision to prosecute Booysen and the Cato Manor officers. The matter was referred for review, and after assessment Chauke was cleared and declared fit to continue serving as the DPP for Johannesburg.
The NPA has not yet released further details of the findings. Booysen and the Cato Manor Unit members were charged in 2012 in a case that drew widespread attention over alleged political interference in prosecutions. The charges were later withdrawn.
